As we start our new quilting year each September, one of the activities our members look forward to is the Block of the Month. We get our pattern and instructions in September. Then, either at home, or with a group of like minded quilters, we follow the instructions for each month. If all goes well, each participant has a completed quilt the following May.

2024 – 2025 Block of the Month
The BOM for 2024-2025 will be a single block called the“Impossible Spiral Quilt Block” – which is a monochromatic block with gradients of the same color family creating a 3D illusion effect. The BOM will consist of this single block but with a twist! A “Paint Chip Challenge” will go along with this BOM. Each participant will draw a mystery envelope that will contain your paint chip. The paint chip will identify the color family that you will use to make your blocks. Each chip contains 3 shades of the mystery color family and you can use as many shades, either solids or prints, from that color grouping as you’d like to construct the block. There are three different quilt settings suggested for completion of your quilt and you can choose the ideal size that you would like to make. I plan on making my quilt into a 3×4 quilt with a border to use as my Ronald Mc Donald quilt.
Block of the Month BEES – We will again be offering monthly Block of the Month sewing BEES, where we can gather to work on our blocks, share fabrics if our stash is short on our selected Paint Chip color and explore some other sewing techniques. The BOM BEES will be held on the following dates: September 26, October 17, November 21, December 19 and January 16 in the Oak Room at the 4H Center from 10am -2pm. Participants are NOT required to attend the BOM BEES but it’s a great opportunity to sit and sew with other guild members, meet and get to know other members and just have a day of dedicated sewing with no external interruptions! Participants are welcome to sew on their own as well. Our group goal is to have a wide variety of completed quilts to display in the Education Room at the 2025 Quilt Show. Once signed up, participants will receive the printed instructions via email. Paint Chip selections will be made at guild meetings and at the BOM BEE sessions. This is a free block posted publicly on the website: tulipsquare.com. There is also a tutorial video that can be downloaded from their website. I hope you will share my excitement about this years’ BOM and the Paint Chip Challenge! Since this is a “one block” wonder quilt, sign ups will be offered on an ongoing basis at monthly guild meetings
Below are the Block of the Month projects for the past several years.
2023 – 2024 Block of the Month – This BOM is called “Sew Colorful Spools #147”. It was designed by Corey Yoder of Coriander Qults. The design was published by the Fat Quarter Shop and offered as a Block of the Month sew along. At the May 2024 meeting, HCQ members shared their progress on the BOM, from completed blocks, to completed tops, to totally completed quilts.

A sampler quilt, here are some examples of the blocks. Block pattern information can be obtained by contacting Joyce Stemple or Susan Koederitz.
2016-2017 Block of the Month
The pattern was a Mystery Quilt from Merry May, a wallhanging which had a small appliqué portion as well as a 3-D yo-yo component. Several members completed the mystery quilt, enjoy all the variations in color scheme.
2015-16 Block of the Month
Members choose between two size patterns, a wall hanging or full bed quilt. Many quilts have been completed and shown during the year. Enjoy a few samples of these stunning quilts. Trying to take a BOM group picture was a bit chaotic since there were so many ladies with quilts. What a lovely problem to have! Click on each picture to enlarge.
